POLAND: Home furnishings retailer Ikea's third wind project in Poland has become operational, completing an EUR 87.3 million portfolio the Swedish company acquired 20 months ago.
The 26MW wind farm in Rymanów, in the Podkarpackie province, south-east Poland, is the last and largest of three wind farms Ikea acquired from developer Martifer Renewables in October 2011.
It was officially opened by Martifer, which continued to build the project for Ikea after its sale, on Tuesday and comprises 13 Repower MM92 2.0MW turbines. It has the capacity to generate an output of around 61GWh per year.
The other projects in the portfolio, also in the mountainous Podkarpackie province, are the 10MW Leki Dukielskie and 18MW Bukowsko. Both were operational when Ikea acquired them in 2011 and use 2MW Repower turbines.
"The opening of the third wind farm in Poland is an important step forward in our efforts to become energy independent — producing more renewable energy than we consume," said Steve Howard, chief sustainability officer at the Ikea Group.
"We will continue to invest in renewable energy and in other solutions enabling sustainability, both in our operations and in customers' homes."
