Formula E electric car series has announced plans for a wireless recharging system, something that could alter the race world forever.
The nature of electric-powered auto racing is expected to be adapted into a new Formula E series, according to Edmunds.
The technology is expected to draw more people to the sport, especially those who are technology buffs that has never given racing a try. Formula E is expected to launch in the fall of 2014 and is FIA-sanctioned.
"The FIA Formula E Championship is going to become a showcase for electric vehicle technology," said Alejandro Agag, CEO of Championship Promoters Formula E Holdings, in a company press release.
Formula E is targeting people who buy vehicles like the Nissan Lead and Fiat 500e according to Edmunds.
Promoters are predicting that many people who become fans of the series may become EV owners themselves.
Smartphone chipmaker Qualcomm's Halo wireless charging technology will be adapted to be used by racecars in 2015.
"New technologies in connectivity, wireless and mobile, fit perfectly with a championship open to new technology, not only for the cars but for everything around the venue," said Agag.
Formula E races will be held on temporary street circuits and Qualcomm has said previously that pads may be left in place and used by private or public vehicles that are capable of recharging.
