CHINA: Longyuan has installed the first five turbines have been installed at what it is claiming as both the world's highest wind farm, and the first to be built in the autonomous region of Tibet.
The five Guodian 1.5MW turbines were installed at the 49.5MW Longyuan Naqu wind farm, which sits at 4,900 metres above sea level, higher than Mont Blanc, the highest point in western Europe.
Longyuan plans to install 33 of the Guodian turbines at its Naqu site, which was originally scheduled to be connected to the grid at the end of this year.
China's National Energy Administration granted approval for the project in March 2012.
Currently, Tibet is the last provincial region in China without a wind farm, despite its annual wind energy reserves amounting to 93 billion/kWh, the seventh largest in China.
The Naqu wind farm's high altitude means the turbines will need to cope with low temperatures, low air density and high wind speeds.
