Electric vehicle showcases composites

Detroit Electric, the reborn electric vehicle manufacturer, partnered with URT Group for the production of the carbon fibre body panels for the new SP:01 sports car.
URT also produced the panels for SP:01 car, which was revealed to a select group of VIPs in Detroit. Six highly-skilled engineers from URT’s production and innovations teams produced the moulds for the car and carried out detailed material research, as well as manufacturing the body panels.
To facilitate the manufacture of the remaining 999 vehicles planned for production, URT has developed a bespoke body engineering programme for the limited edition sports car.
URT’s choice of cutting-edge materials contributes to the vehicle’s gross weight of just 1,090kg. The SP:01 accelerates from 0-62mph in 3.7 seconds and has a top speed of 155mph, making it the fastest-ever pure electric production vehicle.
The SP:01 is the first production vehicle to be marketed under the Detroit Electric brand since 1939. On sale in many of Detroit Electric’s target markets later this year, the SP:01 will herald a new family of all-electric production cars, including two other high-performance models that will enter production by the end of 2014.
