Porsche 918 Spyder makes Goodwood appearance

By Anthony Lim
Another Goodwood blast, this time with the Porsche 918 Spyder – the production form of the parallel full hybrid sportscar has made its public dynamic debut at the festival with a demonstration run up the famous hill.
Details about the car – first greenlighted for production back in 2010 – were announced in May, but its drive appearance at the festival is the first time it’s being showcased to the masses. The series vehicle wears a 608 hp and 530 Nm 4.6 litre V8 engine that’s assisted by two electric motors (front 129 hp, rear 156 hp), with a total output of 887 hp and 1,275 Nm for full output numbers.
Five operating modes are available, these being E-Power, Hybrid, Sport Hybrid, Race Hybrid and Hot Lap. The E-Power electric-only mode offers an approximate range of 30 km, but is still able to get to 100 km/h from a standstill in under seven seconds and offer a 150 km/h top speed, while at the other end of the spectrum, the Hot Lap mode, which can only be activated in ‘Race Hybrid’ mode, pushes the traction battery to its maximum power output limits for a few fast laps.
In its prototype form, the car achieved a Nurburgring lap time of seven minutes 14 seconds last September, approximately 20 seconds quicker than the Porsche Carrera GT. With more test drives on the Nordschleife to follow, expect faster lap times to come about.
