THE Wearside-based project set up to oversee the region’s electric vehicle charging network will end this month after installing more than 1,000 charge points.
Charge Your Car, the North East’s Plugged in Places scheme, has been operating since 2010.
It was originally part of regional development agency One NorthEast, and later part of Zero Carbon Futures, based at the Skills Academy for Sustainable Manufacturing and Innovation, next to Nissan.
The scheme has been responsible for installing 1,129 charging points, including 727 public chargers, 390 domestic chargers and 12 quick chargers – from Berwick to Darlington.
Charge Your Car worked closely with Nissan’s Sunderland plant to ensure a full charging network was in place for the start of production of the Leaf electric car in March.
Josey Wardle, project manager for the Plugged in Places programme, said: “When we began this project in 2010, people weren’t even thinking about electric vehicles, and now we have more electric vehicles per head of population than any other region in the UK. We really believe that without the public availability and visibility of charge points this would not have been the case, and we are delighted that this project has really helped to stimulate the market for low carbon transport.”
